Day 22

Admonition 19:- Of the Happy and unhappy Servant 1

Blessed is the servant who gives up all his goods to the Lord God, for he who retains anything for himself hides “his Lord’s money,”(See Matt 25: 18) and that “which he thinketh he hath shall be taken away from him.”(Luke 8:18.)

Matthew 25:18

But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.2

Luke 8:18

Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.’2

Sometimes things don’t appear to make sense! How can we hide ” Our Lord’s Money”? Rather is may be that we intend to do so or think that by concealing it that we have done so. God sees all and knows all. Whether or not the fact that this verse occurs in the Parable of the Ten talents may also effect its true meaning. I don’t think Francis intended to be so erudite or exact with his exegeses.

However the key is not what we have given or hidden but that once more those who surrender everything they have to God so that they may live their lives for Him and for the gospel have attained that state of Bless-edness.

If we are familiar with the Parable of the Talents we know that the servant given the single Talent being aware of the rather ruthless nature of their master decided to bury it in the ground and to return it to him in tact once he returned. This Talent was taken from him and given to the servant who had made five more on top of the five he received – Luke 8:18: Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.’2

You may have heard of the old adage – of unknown origin I find “USE IT OR LOSE IT”
