The Question of Love…..

As soon as I read this Prayer I knew I must, even for my own sake, respond to the question. Throughout our lives, as Christians we frequently bump into the question of love. At his Last Supper Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and after Judas had left to betray him he left us a new commandment:

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. —John 13:33–35 (KJV; emphasis added )

In the language Jesus spoke- as some refer to the KJV. We have Jesus’ last request for his disciples’ and likewise for us, to love each other with the love with which Jesus first loved us. That is so difficult, because we are human, this humanity can be as a concrete barricade between ourselves and that Love which first loved us; that we know not love. Yet sometimes, we crave loving acceptance from our peers, the Body of Christ;- Here it is again, another of John’s and a trifle easier on the ears

1 John 4:7-21 NIV

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

If we pin all our hopes and dreams upon others,

demanding they meet our criteria,

it places such burdens on them to please us

which in turn makes them all the more wearier.

Yet, is it our criteria to expect others to heed the word’s of the Saviour? NO it is not our criteria and in a perfect church there would be no need to pose it. If they cannot, if we cannot then have we no love? Has not God loved us?

I can remember, all too painfully, when, at a grave crossroads in my life I craved loving acceptance from fellow Christians, expecting the shadow, at least, of that Love which first loved us – and it came not into my ken, nor solaced my heart, my spirit soared not upon the wings of eagles and I felt not the palm of God beneath my feet.

I had burdened them with concepts beyond their faithful understanding and the world of which we are not overcame our indwelling of it.

Did this mean that God did not love me since his disciples could not attempt to show to me a ghost of the Spirit indwelling his children? YES, God loves me, God’s love neither diminishes nor decays neither for me nor for them. God loves us all the more in our weakness, loved them more than me? NO loved me differently.

We must be very careful that when we expect our peers in Christ to respond to us as he Commanded them to that we are not too reliant on their love just because we know his words and expect them to return to us through the love of our fellows in Community.

So, is it enough to know that GOD loves you,

should others their affections withhold?

Yes and Amen! Is my hearty conclusion

for on His limitless love I am sold!

Let me return to the Word, to the children we ought be when in the presence of the Lord, remembering that as children we are weak and afraid, others are weak and afraid, unsure to love that which might be anathema.

Trusting in the LORD

Proverbs 3:1-8

1My child,a never forget the things I have taught you.

Store my commands in your heart.

2If you do this, you will live many years,

and your life will be satisfying.

3Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!

Tie them around your neck as a reminder.

Write them deep within your heart.

4Then you will find favor with both God and people,

and you will earn a good reputation.

5Trust in the LORD with all your heart;

do not depend on your own understanding.

6Seek his will in all you do,

and he will show you which path to take.

7Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.

Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

8Then you will have healing for your body

and strength for your bones…. New Living Translation

So, it is enough to know that GOD loves you,
should others their affections withhold?
Yes and Amen! Is my hearty conclusion
for on His limitless love I am sold!
