THIRD TUESDAY OF LENT: St. Kieran/ Ciaran of Saigher, Monk and Bishop, 4th Century
LITURGICAL THEME OF THE DAY:
Today we honour St. Kieran, a 4th-century saint who was born in the south of County Cork. He left Ireland before St. Patrick brought Christianity to the island. He was a successor of the royal Ulster family, and he followed his religious studies in Tours and Rome. When he returned from France, he settled in a small hut in the forest of Upper Ossory. He became a bishop, and on his way home, he met St. Patrick, who told him to look for a well where he would set up a monastery. Patrick gave him a bell, which would only ring when he found the right well. Eventually, he arrived at a Well known as Uaran, where he founded his monastery known as Saighir-Kiaran, which is in County Offaly. His monastery flourished and he ordained many holy men to the priesthood. He also travelled to Cornwall, Brittany, Wales, and Scotland to spread the gospel. The name of St. Kieran is still esteemed in many of these places today.
BIBLICAL MEDITATION OF THE DAY:
Today’s Psalm invites us to reflect on the mighty works of God in history and in our lives. God is not only the giver of the law, but also the spring of love and mercy. God has made a covenant with the people, a promise of faithfulness and grace. God has shown power and care in freeing them from bondage, providing for them in the wilderness, and leading them to the promised land. As we approach the end of Lent and the celebration of Easter, we are summoned to recollect and celebrate in what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. He is the fulfillment of the covenant, the one who died and rose for our salvation. He is the living water that quenches our thirst, the bread of life that nourishes our souls, and the light of the world that guides our steps. How can we thank God for these marvellous deeds? How can we restore our commitment to this covenant? How can we share these blessings with others?
PRAYER OF THE DAY: Gracious God, deepen my trust, on this day. O Lord, I pray that you be mindful of me when during the times my heart longs for what can only come from you in the fullness of time. Give me a calm assurance that your will for me is grander than anything I could ever imagine. Still, my mind and heart are in your love so that I am mindful of the grace you are draping around me every single day, every single moment. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen
ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: ‘We are all to pray to God to take from us the opportunity of sinning; so frail we are, it is no sooner offered but we are ready to embrace it – God help us…” – Blessed Jeremy Taylor
